Kathleen Elsey California Paintings Paintings

This painting was made in May, 2000 at the Carmel Plein Air Festival. For three days we had to make a painting anywhere on the Monterey Peninsula and return to Carmel by 5:00 a.m. with that painting framed. Because acrylic paint is my medium of choice, my paintings were always dry and ready for a frame a by the time I drove back to Carmel. The oil painters, Kathleen Elsey Workshopshowever, had a bit of a challenge with that framing deadline. My intent was to capture the vibrant color of the iceplant, the fragrance of the wildflowers and the energy of the sea – to capture that moment in time – through the use of thick meaty brushstrokes and vibrant colors. A week before painting this scene, I had been to aVincent Van Gogh painting exhibiiton in Southern California. It had a big influence on my colors and brushwork especially in this painting and for the next few years. I have always admired Vincent Van Gogh's landscape paintings.

On the right is yours truly another year in Carmel where I won an award, so therefore had to do the dreaded 2 hour quick draw. You can see the painting I made called "Van Gogh's Table."   Kathleen Elsey, California artist
