Kathleen Elsey plein air painting of “Hendry’s Beach” 18” x 24”Previously exhibited: 2011 California’s Santa Barbara Maritime Museum 2012 Solo Exhibition, Thos. Moser, San Francisco This fauvist plein air painting was begun in Santa Barbara, California at Hendry’s Beach. The winds kicked up, almost blew my easel over, so I packed it in for the day and finished the painting in my studio working from sketches and photos. My intent was to fill the canvas with ocean and sky. Hendry's Beach is a beautiful mountain back drop setting. So I wanted people, dogs, and the rugged cliffs. Lulu, my dog, comes with me when I go to Hendry's Beach in Santa Barbara. We especially like it on Sunday mornings. Hendry's beach is a beautiful south facing beach. It is one of my favorite beaches on the Pacific Coast. And there is a great beach restaurant here called The Boat House well known for it's poached eggs on crab cakes for brunch. The Kathleen Elsey Painting Workshop enjoyed a fabulous morning painting on this picturesque beach. We arrived with the morning fog and painted before the beach goers arrived. We worked until just after noon to capture our beach scene. And, yes, there were poached eggs and crab cakes after all of our hard work. Some great paintings were made by that group of workshop painters! The Tennessee contingency certainly made progress by leaps and bounds. You might like a painting I just completed “Hendry’s Beach with Yellow Umbrella”or you might like “Beach Days, Misty.” Kathleen Elsey Painting Workshops are available in California, New York and Ohio. |
