Kathleen Elsey painting ”Mediterranean Beach at Sunset”
oil sticks on paper 9" x 13"
As seen in the National Association of Women Artists Exhibition New York City 2013
This oil pastel painting was made while I was in Nice, France. The beaches were packed and the climate was agreeable. I have found that sometimes I don't want to travel with the easel and entire painting set up. So I take my favorite oil crayons and a pad of oil painting paper with sheets of glassine between the paper. I sit on a bench, or in this case, at the back of the crowd on the beach and make a painting with the oil crayons. It is great fun, not too messy and there is no clean up. I love the vibrant colors- just like painting with tubes of paint except easier when traveling. Kathleen Elsey

I have been a signature member of the National Association of Women Artists for fourteen years and always enjoy the opportunities to exhibit paintings with them. NAWA was founded in 1889 by five innovative painters. At that time they called it the Women’s Art Club. In 1913 they changed the name to the National Association of Women Artists, Inc. Many recognized women artists have been associated with NAWA including Mary Cassatt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Louise Nevelson, Alice Neel, Miriam Shapiro.
