I began this painting on summer solstice, June 21, 2013. There was a week long heat wave across California and the western states at the time. We had just had a couple of weeks of fires in the mountains above, so it was a relief to have that problem gone, and I could paint again. I was also recovering from an athletic injury, so couldn't use my arms much for three weeks. Finally all was well and I could get back to making paintings. My intent was to make a happy bright painting of the beach with children of all ages playing, sleeping, walking in the waves. I have fond memories of playing and sunning on this beautiful California beach just north of San Francisco in the town of Stinson.
