I went to San Miguel, California in April and began painting this old historical mission on a grey day. It poured with rain as I worked out of the back of my car. I was with a group of ten painters in a Tom Henderson workshop. It rained so hard, the priest invited us all into the sanctuary, easels and all, to paint. I began a painting of the sanctuary, but after a couple of hours had to rush out because a church service was about to begin. The next morning, the sky had cleared and I finished painting the beautiful mission and filled it with sunshine. Below you can see how I began painting the mission. I sketch, then transfer the shapes and colors I see into paint on canvas. The sanctuary interior painting is still on the easel unfinished.
